Spend a Holiday Weekend in the Heart of Wine Country: Tri-Cities

The Tri-Cities of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco lie at the center of our state’s biggest AVA, Columbia Valley. With over 160 wineries within a 50-mile radius, this area boasts some of the biggest and most familiar names in Washington wine (think Connor Lee, Gamache, Sagemoor – the list goes on), but take note: While the old familiar producers of some of your standby Washington Cabs and Merlots are right here, they have begun to produce different and unexpected varietals. In addition, the area is now sprouting with many new smaller boutique wineries, founded by wine lovers with that contagious entrepreneurial spirit that makes this part of our state so unique. So before the holidays get too crazy, fill up the tank, grab a map, and escape to the heart of wine country.

Eliseo Silva Wines, Richland
Who knew Tagaris Winery had a second label? Eliseo Silva Wines, named after Eliseo “Lee” Silva, the vineyard manager for Tagaris’ 300-acre Alice and Areté Vineyards, crafts delicious, affordable wines. The winemaker for both Eliseo Silva and Tagaris, Frank Roth’s goal is to “become the premiere authority for making wine using as little oak as possible so the vibrant fruit flavors of the wine are predominant.” The 2007 White Riesling from Areté Vineyards (97%Riesling, 3% Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc) is clean and refreshing, with white peach and pear fruit, and a bright and crisp mouth fill.

Pairing Tip: Riesling pairs perfectly with meaty winter dishes such as braised meats and charcuterie – or your favorite sausage stuffing.

Barnard Griffin, Richland
Barnard Griffin’s wines are so popular that they’ve outgrown their winery. Due to increased production, they are currently building an improved storage area for their 15 different wine varietals. Stop by and try one of their latest and greatest bottlings, the 2006 Petit Verdot. Inviting, warm aromas of plum, violets and stone are supported by subtle notes of wood spice and vanilla and a dense core of pomegranate, blueberry preserves and plum flavors.

Pairing Tip: This is a great wine to serve with roasted duck or bison for a very special winter meal.

Anelare, Kennewick
Anelare is a small, limited bottling winery in South Kennewick with a tasting studio open Thursdays through Sundays. In September, they released the 2007 Anelare “Nonna Viola” Red Wine was crafted with grapes from some of our state’s best-known Columbia Valley vineyards: Gamache and Goose Ridge, and Milbrandt’s Katherine Leone Vineyards on the Wahluke Slope. Treat your out of town guests with a taste of true Washington terroir in this delicious blend of 50% Syrah, 25% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anelare will also have a series of wine verticals available for the holidays, enclosed in beautiful ribbon-adorned wood boxes - great for hostess gifts!

Pairing Tip: Pour it into your next simmering beef stew and serve it alongside; or pair it with strong cheeses at your next dinner party.

Gordon Brothers Family Vineyards, Pasco
When Jeff Gordon, his wife Vicki, and brother Bill planted their vineyards in 1980 near the Snake and Columbia Rivers, there were 19 wineries in Washington. Today, there are over 600, but Gordon Brothers remains one of the most loved and award-winning. Since the release of its inaugural 138 case lot of Chardonnay in 1985, the Gordon Brothers portfolio of estate wines has grown to include Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and their highly acclaimed flagship red blend, “Tradition.” For a little something different, try the Late Harvest Gewürztraminer. Upon swirling your glass, aromas of pineapple, pear and spice greet the nose while tropical flavors of papaya, lychee, a bit of apricot and allspice flow easily over the palate into a soft, lingering finish.

Pairing Tip: For a simple, elegant winter dessert by the fire with friends, pair it with blue cheese, toasted walnuts and dried fruits.

Where to Sleep: For a luxurious overnight stay, reserve a room in advance at the elegant 360 Cellars Estate Bed and Breakfast, built in 1971 atop historic Thompson Hill and named for its breathtaking panoramic views of the greater Tri-Cities and the Columbia Valley. The estate is also home to a wine cellar with limited releases of Columbia Valley estate wines, handcrafted by Victor Cruz of Canon De Sol Winery.
