Friday Night Fever across Washington Wine
Country
Start
your weekend getaway off right with some Friday night fun! Wineries all across the vineyard region are
staying open later and featuring special discounts, live
music, food, and more. Following are just a few ways to get
it on the fun, from Yakima to the Tri-Cities to Walla Walla.
YAKIMA
The first Friday of every month, downtown Yakima stays
up late. Wander the quaint streets, mingle with the
locals, enjoy Yakima Valley wines and listen to live
music at nearly every winery, and tasting room, gallery, and shop.
Plaza Socievole Winery,
Kana Winery, Tim's Downtown
Tasting Room, Gilbert Cellars,
The Greystone,
Santiago's,
The Depot, and more - keep their doors open late for these lively, fun and frivolous "First Fridays."
ZILLAH
Bonair Winery in Zillah is serving tasty tapas on Fridays,
Saturdays, and Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00 pm., using as many
local ingredients as possible such as fresh asparagus and
artisanal sausages from Yakima - perfect for pairing with a
glass of Bonair's best.
PROSSER
On Friday and Saturday nights,
Olsen Estates has extended
their hours until 10pm. Relax on the patio next to the
beautiful waterfall and enjoy wines by the glass and bottle,
paired with their delicious tapas. At nightfall, you can
even roast your own marshmallows around the outdoor fire
pit!
Also in Prosser, every Friday from now through Fall,
several wineries are staying open later - until 7:00 pm - and
offering a variety of special events and activities, from
food pairings and happy hour specials to winery tours and more! Lounge on their patios, grab a bottle for dinner, or just
taste your way through the evening. Plus: Be
sure to get your "stroll card" punched and turn it in to any of the participating wineries and
you could win a grand prize. The more often you stroll, the
more chances you'll get to win! Cards must be submitted by October 16th. Participating wineries
include Snoqualmie Winery,
Desert Wind Winery,
Hogue Cellars,
Heaven’s Cave Cellars,
Alexandria Nicole Cellars,
Cowan Vineyards,
Kestrel Vintners, and
Mercer Estates.
Driving further east?
At Desert Wind Winery, stop in each Friday from 4:00 - 7:00
pm for $5 wine by the glass, complimentary wine tasting, and
lots
of great shopping in the gift shop.
Every Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm now through the Fall, enjoy
"Bites and Flights" at
Kestrel Vintners. Taste Kestrel Wines
by the glass or by the flight while relaxing in their beautiful Grotto and enjoying
tasty morsels created in their newly remodeled chef's kitchen along with specialty cheeses
and salamis. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not necessary; first come, first served.
TRI-CITIES
Find yourself in the Tri-Cities, don't miss
Bookwalter
Winery where live music is
standard every evening from Wednesday through Saturday until
10:00 p.m..
Also on Tulip Lane, Tagaris Winery features a concert series on
weekends through the beginning of October - featuring
Buffalo Jones, the Coyote Kings, and more!
WALLA WALLA
Head to
Waterbrook Winery in Walla Walla for "Finally Fridays
- and Saturdays too!" From 12:00 - 8:00 pm, enjoy six
delicious small plates for only $6 each, along with a
glass (or bottle!) of your favorite Waterbrook wine. Try the
local Asparagus with Parsley Pesto, Meatballs in Ancho Chile
BBQ Sauce, or fresh Watermelon with Chevre and Cayenne.
Relax on the patio or in front of the fireplace. Bring your
friends. Play some bocce ball. It's "Finally Friday!" (And
it's all so good, they're doing it on Saturdays too.)
Also through the end of summer,
Sapolil Cellars is staying
open late for "Sip @ Sapolil" hours. Every Friday and
Saturday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, enjoy 15% off all wine by the
Glass! Plus - check out the great live
music coming up on Fridays and Saturdays
from 8:00 to 11:00 pm.
Sip on Sapolil Cellars Wine by the Glass (or the Bottle) or
try a Sapolil Chardonnay "Wine Rita." This Friday, August
21st: Dr. Mark Brown plays pure magic on the keyboard,
throws in a little trumpet, blues harp and vocals. The Good
Doctor is joined by Gary Romjue of Seattle on guitar and
electric blue fiddle. On Friday, August 28th, Walla Walla’s
very own master of music Pete Crawford will be performing
with his two sons (both talented musician in their own
right) providing acoustic folk rock, classics, and some
lively originals. Facts & Tidbits
Did you know?
Fresh, ripe produce abounds at
farmer's markets and produce stands
across the vineyard region, and
now's the time for big,
juicy cantaloupes and watermelon,
tangy raspberries and blackberries,
sweet corn, crunchy cukes,
nectarines, peaches, plums, and of
course, tomatoes. Find out where to
go to fill your trunk with these
end-of-summer treats at our new web
site,

Living Wine Country
Along the Wine Road
The next time you're in Walla Walla, try
Pho Sho.
Upon opening Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen, Owners Chris and
Island Ainsworth made pho so regularly for their staff and
friends that they decided to open Pho Sho right next door.
Everything is made in-house except the rice noodles (you
won't find any MSG here), they use Walla Walla's own
Thundering Hooves all natural beef bones for their stock,
and their vegetarian options are truly vegetarian.
There's nothing like a steaming bowl of this comforting
Vietnamese noodle soup to get you through a day of wine
tasting this fall. Choose from a variety of meats or tofu
("faux" pho), and season liberally with the fresh garnishes
- jalapeño peppers, bean sprouts, onions, and “love”
(according to the menu). Dine in or take it out and pop open
any bottle of the great white wines now being bottled in
Walla Walla - Sleight of Hand Cellars The Magician Gewurtztraminer,
K Vintners Kung Fu Girl Riesling,
Tranche Cellars Rousanne Viognier - the list goes on.
Get a Taste of the Destination
For dessert, cleanse your palate with a bowl of their
house made coconut ice cream. If you're inspired to make
some at home, try this
recipe. Cold, creamy, and luscious, it provides the perfect
base for a topping of late summer fruits - fresh peaches,
nectarines, or berries.
Homemade Coconut Ice
Cream
Ingredients
1/2 c shredded sweetened coconut
1 c sugar
3 large eggs
1 t cornstarch
1/4 t salt
1 c half-and-half
1 1/2 c unsweetened coconut milk
1 c heavy cream
2 t vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Spread the coconut on a
baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Place in the hot oven
for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the coconut turns a light
brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
In a medium mixing bowl, beat the sugar into the eggs with a
hand held mixer until thickened and pale yellow. Beat in the
cornstarch and salt. Set aside.
Combine the half-and-half with the coconut milk in a heavy
medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
Remove from the heat and slowly beat the hot liquid into the
eggs and sugar. Briefly rinse your saucepan and rub dry with
paper towel or cloth. Pour the eggs, sugar, etc mixture back
into the saucepan and place over low heat. Stir constantly
with a whisk or wooden spoon until the custard thickens
slightly. Be careful not to let the mixture boil or the eggs
will scramble. Remove from the heat and pour the hot custard
through a strainer into a large, clean bowl. Allow the
custard to cool slightly, about five minutes, then stir in
the toasted coconut, heavy cream and vanilla. Cover and
refrigerate until cold (about 5 hours) or overnight.
Stir the chilled custard, then freeze in 1 or 2 batches in
your ice cream machine according to the manufacturer’s
instructions. When finished, the ice cream will be soft but
ready to eat. For firmer ice cream, transfer to a
freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 3 hours.
